CASH AND CONVICTION: THE BIG FOUR AND THE FIRST CALGARY STAMPEDE
THURSDAY, JUNE 28
Quick - name the Big Four! The first
three were well known in Calgary; the
fourth ranched near Fort Macleod.
George Lane, A.E. Cross, Patrick Burns and
A.J. Archie McLean were the four successful
ranchers and businessmen who guaranteed
$25,000 each so Guy Weadick could produce
the first Stampede in 1912. Get a glimpse into
their lives and their legacy with Senior Curator
of Cultural History Lorain Lounsberry as she
goes behind the scenes in Glenbow's cultural
history collections.
CALGARY 1912
THURSDAY, JULY 12
The city of Calgary is well-known for its cycles
of "boom and bust" - the exciting times when
the city flourishes and its citizens are giddy
with optimism about the future, only to be
followed by the dark days of the inevitable "correction" as the economy contracts,
affecting governments and individuals alike.
Join archivists from Glenbow's Library and
Archives as we look back at Calgary in 1912,
the year of the city's first boom, through
photographs, maps, archival documents and
publications.
